SmartSweets is tackling one of the largest and most concerning problems hidden in our everyday foods - sugar. At SmartSweets, we use no sugar, sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners. Our gummy bears are naturally sweetened with our stevia formulation. Stevia is a low-glycemic sweetener extracted from leaves of the Stevia Rebaudiana plant. It provides great tasting calorie-free sweetness and is what replaces sugar in SmartSweets. With only 2g sugar per bag of SmartSweets gummy bears, you can feel good about enjoying candy!

Our gummy bears are enriched with 24 grams plant-based fiber per bag. Soluble fibre slows the digestion of SmartSweets so you stay satisfied longer. I'm Tara, the 23 year old founder of SmartSweets. We're on a mission to Kick Sugar and create a movement based on smaller, smarter choices. My quest to innovate the first smart candy that kicks sugar began after forming an unhealthy relationship with food and experiencing the negative effects sugar has on our health. After spending months recipe testing in my kitchen, I innovated the first candy you can feel good about enjoying. How did you come up with the idea for this product?
Growing up, I had an unhealthy relationship with food, which affected my self-esteem and body image. As I got older, it became apparent that healthy relationships in all aspects of life come from smaller, smarter choices. In a conversation with my grandmother, I learned that she regretted consuming so much excess sugar over the years, especially from one of our favorite treats, candy. She shared how the affects of sugar on her health have impacted her quality of life. It was this conversation, coupled with my personal journey, that sparked my exploration into the shocking reality of sugar and how it’s affecting society in a dramatic way. Equipped with my belief that we should feel good about enjoying the foods we love, I bought a gummy bear mold and began recipe testing in my kitchen on a quest to create the first candy that kicks sugar.
What makes your product special?
With a mission and vision directly informed by the negative impacts sugar has on our health, SmartSweets has a unique authenticity: addressing sugar naturally is at the core of our ‘why’ and building a community around that based on kicking sugar. The first two SmartSweets SKU’s we launched are Fruity and Seriously Sour gummy bears with just 3g sugar and packed with 24g plant based fibre per bag. Our brand promise is to use no sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners, or sugar in innovating kick sugar candy products we can feel good about enjoying!
What has been the best part of your experience?
It's really exciting that there is absolutely no limit to what can be achieved and the positive impact you can create in the world for others. I really think confidence is everything and key to growing an idea into a business- “Whether you believe you can or can’t, you’re right!” is one of my favourite quotes. When you believe you are capable and are equipped with confidence, you are unstoppable.
